This is coming to the forefront of wellness holidays.  Alongside physical wellbeing, meditation or mindfulness are becoming a regular offering on the activities schedule at many health retreats.  Letting go of the constant chatter from the busy world around you and finding some inner peace and calm will pay huge dividends.  Being constantly stressed and rushing around tends to catch up with you in the long run so why not put into place some markers to help you calm down and re-focus when life seems to be running out of control?

It's often a good idea to learn a new 'skill' on holiday when you have time to fully commit to it and be taught the correct methods by a professional.  You'll then find it easier to continue once you are home as you are in the rhythm of doing it.  Many feel that meditation or mindfulness is not for them but it can be done by anyone – you just need to find what suits you best.  The former is concentration based where you concentrate and focus on an object or mantra whilst the latter is awareness based where you become aware of your own thoughts, how your body feels and what's happening around you.  Take a look out our fact sheet sheet for further details.

It's been proven that meditation slows your brain down which leads to less anxiety.  The more that you do it, the more your neural pathways are loosened so that when you find yourself in a potentially stressful situation, the more likely you are to not be quite so affected as you can look at the situation more rationally.

In addition, those that meditate have been shown to have higher amounts of compassion and empathy as the connections in your brain that deal with information processing and bodily sensations become stronger and allow you to more easily understand other people's mindsets and in particular those that you don't intuitively understand.  Now that's pretty useful all round eh?

You might find meditating or mindfulness beneficial if you suffer from low moods in particular – learning to re-set your frame of mind when you feel a 'dip' coming on or taking time out to focus on a mantra can really benefit your mood and help change your outlook.
