The benefits of Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking – get your poles out!

Keep hearing about Nordic walking but not sure if it's for you?

Bristol Nordic Walking instructor, Vicky Welsh, gives us the top reasons why you should be out there giving it a go.

  • Its an enhanced form of normal walking, using specially designed poles planted behind you to propel you forwards and give you a total body workout.

  • Regular brisk walking can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as running.  Adding 2,000 moderately paced walking steps a day to regular activity could help cut your risk of a heart attack or stroke by 8%.  Doing 4,000 more steps reduces your cardiovascular risk by about 16 - 20 % which is the equivalent of taking a statin.

  • A class will amass somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 steps in just one hour.

  • It can improve back pain and general all-over back stiffness.  Most of us tend to look down too much, round our shoulders and bend our heads forwards when we are sitting at our desks/ computers/ eating/driving which puts immense stress on our necks and upper backs and pulls us completely out of alignment.

  • Nordic walking strengthens the core muscles by engaging them every time you plant your pole.  It also strengthens the buttock muscles and pelvic floor which play an important part in stabilising your body and supporting your back.  Advanced techniques gently rotate the spine, boost circulation and increase oxygen and nutrients to the discs and vertebrae.

  • Once you have mastered the walking technique, your posture will benefit immensely – possibly the number one benefit!

  • Planting the poles behind you automatically encourages your body to hold itself in a more upright and open position.  Even when you're not Nordic walking, your body has been 'switched on' to a better postural alignment.

  • Walking is kinder on your joints and is also a weight-bearing activity which reduces your risk of osteoporosis.

  • It uses your upper and lower body and works over 90% of your skeletal muscles which is much more than normal walking or running.  In particular, pushing through the strap strengthens your wrists, which is one of the key fracture danger areas as we age.

  • Walking can even improve fitness and help you lose weight in the way that running can if you do it properly.

  • Classes are a mix of fast and slow pace and generally include hills to inject added intensity.  You will burn up to 46% more calories than ordinary walking so it's a winner for weight loss and weight management.
