What does a detox entail & what are the benefits?

A detox is the process of getting rid of toxic and unhealthy substances from your body and at the same time supporting it through the process with the nutrients that it needs to function properly. There are a number of ways of doing a detox and can include juices or broths, raw food or just vegan alkalising food.

Weight loss on a detox programme is more a by-product. It is intended to increase energy, rest your digestive system and make your eyes brighter!

A weight-loss programme is different from a detox programme. That aims to kick-start weight loss although results do depend on your thyroid function.

To avoid a detox “crash” which comes with a radical change in diet, try to:

  • Adjust your diet to remove stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, refined sugars, saturated fats and processed foods one to two weeks before you travel. 
  • Help your digestion by having your last meal of the day by 7.00 pm. Tempting as it is to have the last “blow-out” on your flight to your detox destination, try not to fill the hours with endless snacks, trays of plane food or alcoholic drinks.
  • Get to bed early the week leading up to your detox as it’s best to be well rested before putting your body through quite an intensive process.
  • Skin brush your body with upward movements toward the heart with a natural bristle brush to stimulate toxins out of your body and start the detox process.
