Stella visits the beautiful Columbia Beach Resort in Cyprus and gives us her 'insider' review:
What were your first impressions of the resort?
I was struck by how quiet and tranquil Pissouri Bay seemed in comparison to other parts of the island. The luxury resort is bang on the beach and as it underwent a huge renovation in 2017 (merging with its sister hotel next door to make one resort), there are plenty of facilities and space. It's been cleverly done and you'll love the immaculate gardens and sense of being in Cyprus as there's local stone and terracotta tiles everywhere. It really is perfect for a relaxing wellbeing holiday in the sunshine!
What do you think makes the resort so special?
I would say the welcoming and knowledgeable staff - many have been there for years and you get the full, warm 'Cypriot' welcome. The spa is petite but has a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna plus relaxation area and dip pool. The treatments are excellent - be sure to try to Swedish back massage as mine was blissful... There's also a good variety of group fitness classes so the resort is a great option for anyone who likes to stay active or dip in and out of classes depending on how energetic they are feeling.
What was your favourite activity?
I spent a lot of time in the pools (there are 2) and I particularly loved the central lagoon one - in fact I found it mesmerising. It's so visually beautiful to look at with palm trees all around and glorious sea views. I also enjoyed lounging on the beach - there is something about the sound of lapping waves which is so peaceful. The water sports centre was very popular and I saw lots of fellow guests trying out water skiing and windsurfing plus, of course, the hilarious banana boat rides...
In addition, there's a professional cycle centre within the resort (which I've never seen at any other resort) where you can hire an impressive range of bikes - a brilliant way to get out and explore the area and there are also guided rides. It's run by a former Swiss cycling champion so if you love your cycling or are coming with someone who does, then prepare to be very impressed.
How was the food?
As this isn’t a pure wellbeing resort, there is a range of food options from healthy to gourmet - it’s all about balance. There are 4 restaurants so you have plenty of choice from buffet to a la carte and the emphasis is on fresh ingredients. I particularly liked the Apollo Tavern which has delicious, traditional meze and a beautiful setting overlooking the sea. Be sure to pop into the All Saints Chapel - it's next to the restaurant - and it's incredible. Its interior was painted by famed Scottish artist John Corbidge and its riot of vivid colours will leave you agog.
What was your favourite aspect of the resort?
The group fitness classes – they are a lot of fun and a great way to get chatting to the other guests too. I tried most of them from yoga to circuit training and really liked all the instructors as they were friendly and motivating. The classes are all very inclusive too - it really doesn't matter what level you are - which is always a nice touch.
Who would you recommend the resort to?
This is one of those places that would suit everyone from singles to families. You'd have to be a fairly independent single traveller (as it's not a 'cosy' resort) but if you love being by the beach and sea and enjoy restorative spa treatments and energising fitness activities, then book soon as you will love it!
