Our Product Manager, Helen, headed off to check out the wonderful spa at COMO Point Yamu in Phuket, Thailand and reports back on her findings:
Aside from how easy it is to get there from Phuket Airport (about 20 minutes), I was struck by how private it is... the newly built hotel sits on a peninsular so once you’ve passed through the gates, it’s very private and secluded. My first glimpse of the contemporary grey main building, which is quite stark, edgy, but works, was followed by the open sided, gigantic reception area, which looks onto That View. It was That View which was the first impression, my overall impression and my lasting impression; the spectacular 360˚C vista across the Andaman Sea and the dramatic UNESCO-protected limestone formations of Phang Na Bay.
Aside from That View, which truly is sublime, the COMO spa is faultless and the treatments are both effective and soothing. The team are helpful in a natural Thai-manner but unobtrusive. The hotel is uber stylish – think poured concrete, clean lines, funky textures, wow-factor bathrooms and delicate tiles. It’s like slipping into a page of Conde Nast. Add into the mix the daily complimentary catamaran boat transfers to their private beach club on a nearby island (as there isn’t a beach on the hotel’s peninsular) and the renowned COMO cuisine, and it’s spot on for rejuvenation, relaxation and on-trend sophistication. I absolutely loved it.
It has to be the Full Body COMO Shambhala Signature Massage; the COMO team just get it so very right. First class technique, polished protocol, intuitive touch and an adults-only relaxation area with a pool, plus That View.
Aside from the restorative spa treatments and relaxing beside their three pools (one’s so shallow that you can even take your sun lounger in there to cool off!), taking the boat across to the private beach club was a real highlight. I wasn’t sure to start with how it would be not having direct beach access from the hotel itself, but it worked so well – you have the best of both, the height of the hotel on the peninsular for dramatic views, the feeling of exploring and delving into the karst scenery by taking the boat and then impeccable sands and tranquillity on the tiny idyllic island (which has some great facilities too, like spa treatment rooms, so it’s barefoot luxury rather than just barefoot...). If you’re feeling active though, their complimentary daily classes are worth going to – the yoga is particularly good.
Ah, the food. Again, hats off to COMO. You can be as healthy or indulgent as you want, but their healthy options are impressive – creative, innovative and delicious. Their buffet breakfast was a real highlight; my boyfriend, as an avid instagrammer, was in foodie paradise...
Independent single travellers, friends wanting time together to relax and catch-up, couples seeking privacy. They do accept families but it’s not overly family friendly, it’s more adult focused in terms of the layout and design. They also offer free nights at their sister COMO property in Bangkok, so although it’s a perfect place to escape to, it’s also useful to know about the possibility of stopping in Bangkok en-route if you fancy it, just ask us for more details.
