Few hotels can say they’re located on a sacred hillside, but that’s true of the aptly named Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary. This peaceful retreat is built around an ancient meditation cave once used by Buddhist monks, cloaked in a blanket of tropical greenery and fronted by a sweep of white sand on the Gulf of Thailand.
It’s easy to embrace stillness and reflection here – a major reason the resort is celebrated worldwide for its transformative experiences. Flower-filled gardens, Buddha statues and quiet pavilions frame views of the sea and jungle, giving way to a series of world-class wellness facilities including open-air treatment rooms, steam caverns, plunge pools and consultation spaces.
An army of expert practitioners – from naturopaths and yoga instructors to TCM and nutrition specialists – guides personalised wellness journeys that pair ancient healing traditions with Western insights. Guests begin with a consultation and can choose from more than 70 therapies, from traditional Thai and Ayurvedic treatments to medical longevity practices and functional fitness.
Kamalaya’s tranquil environment makes it best suited to adults. Families can book with a maximum of one child per room, but bear in mind there are no dedicated children’s activities on-site.
Kamalaya in the press: find out what happened when Elle's Sophie Beresiner travelled to the retreat for an emotional overhaul.
Kamalaya takes a mind–body–spirit approach to wellness, an ethos that’s reflected across its stays and therapies. The spa is woven into the natural landscape, with open-air treatment rooms that make the most of the tropical setting. A team of more than 70 certified practitioners provide expert, personalised care, made up of naturopaths, nurses, nutritionists, massage therapists and yoga teachers. And there's a top line-up of focused programmes on offer, tailored around everything from detox and yoga to fitness and women's health.
In terms of facilities, there are 25 treatment rooms, a Longevity House for medical diagnostics and biohacking therapies, consultation rooms, dedicated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic spaces, infrared saunas, steam caverns and plunge pools. There's also a 25-metre lap pool nestled among the palms.
Kamalaya has 75 rooms set among granite boulders, streams and exotic gardens, including 24 hillside rooms, 26 suites and 25 villas. Some are located at the bottom of the steep hill, which means reaching the restaurant, wellness centre and activity areas can be a bit of a workout. Buggies are available on demand, but if you’d like to be closer to the action, be sure to consider the room type carefully – ask us for details. Mosquito repellent is supplied in all room types.
Just so you know, Wi-Fi is not included and can be purchased on-site. There's no Wi-Fi in the restaurant or spa areas, helping to maintain the sanctuary’s peaceful, screen-free atmosphere.
The sleepy village of Na Muang and livelier Lamai are just a few minutes’ drive away. You’ve also got easy access to the popular Secret Buddha Garden, which lies in the island’s hills around 20 minutes from the retreat. Another local gem is Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, which can be reached on a day trip by boat from the island’s west coast.
The transfer time from Koh Samui Airport is around 40 minutes. Flights from Bangkok are frequent and take around one hour. Return airport transfers are included for guests on a wellness programme.
