Since the average person spends around 60% of their day at work, it strikes us as crucial to consider our wellbeing within the workplace. We are all familiar with that middle-of-the-afternoon lull that creeps up on us after lunch, or the achy discomfort experienced after long periods sat at our desks. Whilst it's widely recognised that a balanced diet, plenty of exercise and a good night's sleep all contribute to us feeling good, do we actively look out for our wellbeing when we're working? If this concept is new to you, we have just collected our Top Tips for wellbeing at work.

Be strict about stimulants

Reduce your intake of stimulants such as sugar and caffeine, particularly in the morning to avoid the inevitable crush later in the day. Instead, keep your brain hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and try sipping green tea to heighten concentration. Green tea is packed with antioxidants which awaken your brain and boost your mental performance. Helpful hint: If you are not keen on the bitter taste of pure green tea, try it combined with pomegranate or mango.

Go walking

Scientists believe that we are only capable of concentrating properly for short periods at a time, especially if we are stationary. So every 30-60 minutes stand up, stretch and take a quick walk around the workplace. This will increase blood flow to the brain, so when you return to your desk you are more focused. If you need a more intense energy-boost (and you don't get embarrass easily) do a few invigorating star jumps.

Sit up straight

Your spine hates nothing more than being bent awkwardly over your desk or slouched in an unnatural position, so show it some love by staying aware of your posture, when both seated and standing. Check the height of your chair in relation to your desk and ensure your screen isn't positioned so far away that you are squinting. If you want to make your core muscles work as hard as you do, invest in a Pilates ball to use instead of a chair; a great way to improve posture, core strength and balance.

Preserve your lunch break

As dedicated as you might be to your job, and as busy as the day gets, a lunch break really is important. Not only is it crucial to take a mental break from the workplace, it is much better for your digestion to eat lunch away from your desk. If you gulp down your food whilst you continue to return emails and answer phone calls it compromises your digestion, which can lead to heartburn and insufficient absorption of nutrients. We recommend heading to the local park to get some fresh air, chew your food slowly and enjoy some moments of calm.

Connect with colleagues

A happy workplace is a productive workplace, so connect with your colleagues! Engage in some light banter and see how a little laughter improves the wellbeing of the entire team.

But our biggest tip of all for Wellbeing at Work is to take a Wellbeing Escape! Your overall health improves significantly when you take time out of your working life to relax and rejuvenate. Taking a spa holiday is essential so that you can return to your professional life with more energy, focus and enthusiasm.
