Kamalaya is known to provide an excellent detox holiday, so all these years later I have arrived back to this special place feeling much healthier and ready to purify. Well, so I thought, until I had my consultation with lovely naturopath Kate, who listened carefully and went through my health check data. She suggested that I veer towards the Structural Revival programme, which is designed to realign the body, improve posture and help with tightness and tension.
I could hear the words of my friend and co-founder of Kamalaya, Karina Stewart, ringing in my ear saying everyone should do a detox annually. So, Kate kindly added in some detox treatments as a nod to my wishes, and I followed the detox food plan which was delicious and kept me very satisfied. I didn’t feel like I was sacrificing anything as there are so many detox choices on the menu and a big upside of a slightly less bloated belly.
One of my first treatments was a 3D scan with the excellent physiotherapist, Khun Aor, who identified my postural issues then went on to give me an hour of blissful myofascial release (the fascia, is the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs in the body). I will be definitely seeking this out when I return to London. It felt much more releasing and bearable than a deep tissue massage, which I usually tense up with from the pain.
My programme unfolded with private reformer Pilates lessons to address my structural weak points, holistic massages overlooking the lush tropical fauna with a view to the ocean to soothe my body and soul, infrared sauna sessions to remove those pesky toxins and more of that deeply therapeutic myofascial release.
In their continuous efforts to improve their offering, the team at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary have been creating their new Longevity House which offers medical and biohacking therapies. I have to be honest, and say that when I initially heard about them offering Vitamin IVs, ozone treatments and Hyperbaric Oxygen therapies, I was a bit dubious of how it would fit in with the very natural and holistic Kamalaya setting. When I first entered the building, it was obvious that the team had gone to great efforts to not make it look like a medical facility. The décor and window scapes are soft and welcoming and somehow, they have managed to make this feel like it’s part of the ancient wisdom that permeates throughout Kamalaya.
As part of my detox regime I was given a Cleanse and Purify IV cocktail that includes vitamins B12, B6, glutathione (antioxidants) and Alpha Lipoic acid, which all help to detoxify the liver and energise. I quickly forgot that I had an IV drip in my arm whilst I listened to the meditative binaural beats on the headphones provided and gazed out into tropical nature. It was clear that every detail about this experience had been thoroughly considered.
Another experience at the Longevity House was the Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber, where I breathed in pure oxygen for 90 minutes. Why, you may ask? Well it speeds up recovery from exercise which slows as you age and reduces inflammation by facilitating the growth of new blood vessels. This is not for those who suffer from claustrophobia but if you are up to having a little nap or meditating while you heal and get energised I would definitely recommend it. You can even take your phone in if you want a bit of distraction. Currently these biohacking treatments are extra to the programmes, however they will be rolled into the inclusions of some of the programmes next year.
