Eyes - the window of your inner health

Whilst we wouldn’t be adverse to the idea, unfortunately we can't go on spa breaks all of the time, so we've asked Margo Marrone from The Organic Pharmacy to kindly share her expertise and top tips on how to improve eye health along with her recommended products that will at least make it look like you’ve just been on a spa holiday.

Did you know that the skin around the eyes is ten times thinner than the rest of the face and contains no oil glands so needs extra care and extra attention? Common problems include puffiness, loss of firmness, fine lines and dark circles.
Puffiness
Under eye puffiness can be a combination of heredity, diet and skin care - getting enough sleep is essential but salt is also one of the biggest culprits for puffy eyes. In Chinese medicine, puffiness under the eyes indicates a deficiency in kidneys and certainly reducing salt and drinking more water will help the kidneys. My favourite herbs for the kidneys are Shizandra, Dandelion, Artichoke and Barberry – I recommend 15 drops twice a day when eyes are puffy along with topical treatment along with at least 6 glasses of water, reduced salt and gentle massage to help reduce the puffiness.Loss of Firmness
Gentle treatment around the eyes are essential, so no pulling to tugging. A gentle eye make up remover that easily takes of all eye make up without irritation is essential and to date I have found nothing better than Carrot Butter Cleanser which just melts make up on contact. Once all make up is removed proper hydration is essential to keep the area hydrated and plump. My favourite eye treatment is Expression Treatment which contains sodium hyaluronate and Acmella Oleracea a herb from Peru which helps relax muscles temporarily smoothing fine lines and wrinkles temporarily. Before that, its also important to exfoliate the eye area where lines are visible. Our Enzyme Peel Mask is perfect for gentle exfoliation and follow with Expression Treatment.Dark Circles
This is perhaps the most common complaint I hear about. Because the skin under the eye is extra thin, blood vessels ban become visible particularly if there is damage and they leaking. Cleansing is essential to help the body and cells recover so plenty of green juices with ginger and lemon, probiotics and Detox Capsules. To help with skin density and capillary repair using your ring finger apply a light gel cream – my favourite is Lifting Eye gel which has Bilberry and Arnica.Regardless of how long it’s been since you’ve treated yourself to a spa holiday, start experimenting with the application of the above tips to add to your inner glow and make your eyes sparkle year ‘round!
