Overview

Somatheeram is one of Kerala’s original and most respected Ayurvedic beach resorts, set among coconut groves on India’s west coast. With a prime postcode on honey-hued Chowara Beach, the surroundings are tropical and tranquil, with sea breezes, birdsong and lush gardens shaping daily life. It’s an adults-only resort built in traditional Kerala style, with sloping tiled roofs, carved wooden details and heritage-inspired cottages.

Ayurveda is the primary focus here. For more than 30 years, Somatheeram has specialised in authentic healing programmes using natural herbal medicines, therapeutic oils and dosha-specific vegetarian meals. Each stay begins with a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, followed by a personalised programme of treatments, yoga and meditation.

The expertise of the team is widely recognised, with numerous industry awards including multiple consecutive wins for Best Ayurveda Wellness Centre. It’s a place guests return to time and again for meaningful, results-led wellbeing – the beautiful setting scores bonus points.

Wellness

Somatheeram has been dedicated exclusively to Ayurveda for more than three decades, earning a strong reputation for authenticity and expertise. The Ayurveda centre is staffed by Ayurvedic doctors and supported by an on-site academy and herb garden, where many of the medicines used in treatments are produced. Treatment rooms are simple, candlelit cubicles. Female guests are treated by female therapists, and male guests by male therapists.

Each programme begins with a detailed consultation, during which an Ayurvedic doctor determines your dosha (body type), and designs your personalised treatment plan. That might involve certain therapies, mindful movement, and specialist herbal supplements. Throughout your stay, you’ll be treated by the same therapist where possible.

Facilities include 24 treatment rooms, an open-air yoga platform, indoor yoga studio, beauty salon, dental practice and an on-site medicine shop. Just so you know, there are no whirlpools or saunas here – the focus is firmly on traditional, healing Ayurveda.

What’s on the menu

The food at Somatheeram is entirely vegetarian and rooted in Ayurvedic principles. Ingredients are grown locally and prepared to support balance and digestion, resulting in a generous spread of flavourful curries, nourishing soups and fresh salads. At the buffet, each dish is clearly labelled according to the dosha it’s best suited to, making it easy to choose meals that align with your individual constitution (this is assessed by an Ayurvedic doctor at the start of your stay). An à la carte menu is available for those who prefer it.
