Eremito
Umbria, Italy
Overview
Nestled in the heart of a forest and completely off grid (with no TV, Wi-Fi, or mobile signal), this is a place find equilibrium. The retreat is the brainchild of Marcello Murzilli, who felt a strong connection with the place and wanted to create something wonderful. After four years of works and restoration Eremito was born in 2013, successfully reviving its authentic original splendour.
Eremito is one of the first digital detox hotels in Italy, with sustainability at its core. It uses solar panels and a photovoltaic system to convert sunlight to electricity, and its main source of lighting is candlelight. Facilities include a beautiful relaxation area with a pool and Turkish bath, a yoga studio and a stone-walled cave for meditation.

Wellness
One of Italy’s first digital detox retreats, Eremito places sustainability at the heart of its philosophy. The property is powered by solar panels and a photovoltaic system that converts sunlight into electricity, while candlelight provides much of the illumination, making this a seriously atmospheric place for wellness experiences.
The relaxation area is spectacular, with rock carvings, stone ceilings and soul-stirring Gregorian chants that serve as background music. Here, you’ll find a warm water pool, Jacuzzi and a Turkish bath, as well as a fully equipped yoga room which overlooks the unspoiled surrounding nature reserve.
Massage treatments are available at Eremito but must be pre-booked before arrival.

Nothing about this retreat is ordinary, including its rooms. There are 18 in total, once used by hermits. Simple and comfortable, they’re housed in a stone building that keeps guests warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
Compact and cosy, these rooms come with a French bed (large double), with bedding made of hand-made hemp yarn, a private bathroom and a stone desk. The desk is located next to a window which overlooks either the green valley or the rose garden. Rooms have no TVs or Wi-Fi, but there is underfloor heating in the colder months.
What’s on the menu
Just so you know, dinner is enjoyed in silence for inner reflection.
Location
Eremito is located in the green heart of Umbria, an Italian region bordering Tuscany. Considered to be the historic cradle of Italian spirituality, it’s a lush area peppered with historic monasteries and ancient hermitages. The retreat is nestled on top of a hill, overlooking 3,000 hectares of natural reserve and the River Chiani.
There are three airports to choose from if you’re flying in. Perugia is around one-and-a-half hours away, while Rome and Florence are both a two-hour drive away. Coming by train? The nearest station is Fabro Ficulle, 25 minutes from the retreat. Private transfers can be arranged on request.
