About Alpino Atlantico

Alpino Atlantico is a compact, adults-only Ayurveda retreat perched on Madeira’s southeast coast, with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. With just 27 rooms and suites, it’s an intimate, peaceful base for a break.

The heart of the experience is the Ashoka Ayurveda Cure Centre, where doctor-led consultations and personalised treatment plans combine Ayurvedic therapies with yoga, meditation and tailored nutrition. Traditional programmes range from deep cleansing Panchakarma to strength and rejuvenation plans, each designed to rebalance your mind and body.

Meals are full board, spotlighting Ayurvedic vegetarian cuisine drawn from fresh, local and seasonal produce.

While the focus here is on structured healing, guests also have access to the wider Galo Resort facilities nearby (including gym, pools and saunas) if you want a little extra movement or relaxation beyond your treatments.


Wellness at Alpino Atlantico

The Ashoka Ayurveda Cure Centre is tucked away in a quiet corner of the retreat. Experienced Ayurvedic doctors and therapists create fully personalised programmes based on your individual dosha combination (body make-up). Following a detailed consultation, your plan may include a tailored nutrition programme, locally sourced therapeutic herbs, Ayurvedic body treatments, Reiki, yoga and meditation. The centre has seven treatment rooms, a relaxation room, yoga studio and Ayurvedic shop.

Guests can also access facilities at Alpino Atlantico’s sister hotels: Sentido Galomar, 300 metres away, and Sentido Galosol, 400 metres away. Galo Active Health Club at Galosol has a fully equipped gym, more than 40 fitness classes, an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and saunas. Ashoka Spa at Galomar, meanwhile, offers international beauty treatments, massages, detox therapies and energy work, alongside four sea-view saunas – infrared, bio, Finnish and steam – plus two outdoor pools.

Intensive Ayurveda Treatment for the Musculoskeletal System with the Help of the Marma Therapy (Kalari) - Ayurveda is optimally supplemented with Kalari therapy, which dissolves blockages and tensions on the myofascial level. The treatment is particularly suitable for relaxing your body cavities and the organs they contain so that they have more space to function more dynamically. This treatment can reduce pelvic and abdominal pain. Work on the chest area will make breathing easier and deeper, reduce pressure on the heart, and help you have more restful sleep. Working on the organs of the head and face helps your entire system becomes clearer, freer, and more relaxed, which also reduces the intensity of migraine attacks. All in all, Kalari therapy reduces pressure and stress in the spine and joints, which in turn has a lasting positive effect on posture, flexibility, and vitality.

The aim of the cure is to strengthen the immune system. According to Ayurveda, 80% of it is in the digestive tract. Therefore, we focus on this during the cure. The program includes extensive nutritional advice including Ayurvedic nutritional supplements, private yoga and pranayama lessons as well as individually tailored Ayurveda and cleaning treatments. A trip to the wonderful nature of Madeira – for forest bathing – rounds off the program. As usual, the whole thing is looked after holistically by our two Ayurveda doctors.

What’s on the menu?

Dining at Alpino Atlantico is entirely vegetarian, with all guests on an Ayurvedic full board basis. Menus are designed around the three Ayurvedic doshas – vata, pitta and kapha – which relate to your individual make-up. The buffet is balanced to include all three, rather than tailored to a single dosha.

Guests following a Panchakarma cleansing programme are served specialised meals to support their treatment. Food is full of flavour, made with herbs from the on-site garden and seasonal fruit and vegetables sourced locally. Just so you know, alcohol isn't available.

Alpino Atlantico has just 27 rooms and suites, each with a private balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Spacious and light-filled, they feature floor-to-ceiling windows that make the most of the views.

LOCATION

Alpino Atlantico sits on Madeira’s south-east coast, in a tranquil corner overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The drive from Cristiano Ronaldo Funchal International Airport takes around 15 minutes, and the charming capital, Funchal, is even closer – well worth a day trip for its Farmers’ Market, authentic restaurants and waterfront wine bars. 

WHEN TO GO

Madeira is full of microclimates but stays warm almost all year round. Temperatures in winter are 18 – 22 degrees and in summer 24 – 26 degrees. There is about 2,450 hours of sun a year.

Alpino Atlantico is small with a friendly vibe, the staff are all very helpful and made me feel extremely welcome. The location is great as it's right by the water and I really enjoyed lounging on my balcony with the un-interrupted views of the ocean. I did the relaxing cure programme which was amazing. The in-house Ayurveda doctors are extremely knowledgeable and I had an in-depth consultation with the doctor who prescribed me my dosha and gave me some health and wellness tips to take home. I cannot fault the treatments, they were all incredibly relaxing and just what I needed after a stressful few months at work. The morning yoga and Qi-Gong classes were a great way to wake up. The food was delicious and really liked the buffet as you can have as much as you wanted! I ended up using the facilities in the sister hotel literally 5 minutes down the road such as the outdoor pool, gym and the lido. I would highly recommend Alpino Atlantico for those wanting to enjoy Ayurveda but don't want to fly all the way to India. The retreat offers authentic and quality treatments in a relaxed location. I will definitely be returning soon.
