About Shanti Maurice Resort & Spa

Shanti Maurice is a five-star hideaway on Mauritius’ idyllic south coast, with its own powder-soft beaches and a sheltered cove teeming with marine life. It’s a sprawling resort, spread across 35 acres of palm-peppered gardens. And with just 61 suites and villas, it feels private and secluded. Many of the rooms come with private pools and are perfectly placed to soak up the views of the mountain and ocean backdrop.

The Shanti Spa is a big draw here. The largest in Mauritius, it specialises in Ayurvedic treatments, yoga, meditation, Pilates, and wellness-focused cuisine. Active guests can use the fitness centre, go kayaking, snorkelling or paddle boarding, while golfers have access to the nearby 18-hole Avalon course. When you’ve worked up an appetite, the resort offers a variety of dining options, from rustic Mauritian home cooking to aromatic Asian and Middle Eastern dishes.

Families are welcome at Shanti Maurice, and there’s an action-packed Kids’ Club that’ll keep little ones entertained.

Wellness at Shanti Maurice Resort & Spa

The Shanti Spa has been built around two tea pavilions, surrounded by lily ponds and flower gardens. It covers 7,500 metres – the largest on the island – and is inspired by ancient Ayurvedic healing, with tailored treatments, food, and programmes to suit every goal, from fitness and sleep to meditation and stress management. Therapists trained at the renowned Ananda in The Himalayas resort provide expert care, alongside an in-house Ayurvedic doctor. 

The facilities list is lengthy, and includes dedicated treatment rooms, a dosha-specific therapy menu (designed to adapt to your unique body make-up), an Ayurveda garden and cooking classes. There’s also an outdoor pool with a neighbouring Jacuzzi, a lap pool, Watsu pool, AquaFit pool, yoga and Pilates pavilions, meditation and relaxation rooms, a sauna, hammam, and a hair and beauty salon, along with a well-equipped gym, tennis courts and jogging track. 

Yoga’s a big deal here, with Hatha, Vinyasa, Aerial, Yin and Bikram all on offer for those who want to find their flow.

Stars is the place for refined Indian Ocean cuisine in a relaxed setting, while Feet in the Sand and the Fish Market offers seafood and beachside barbecues. Le Kaze Mama celebrates traditional Mauritian home cooking, and Asia Lounge & Fine Sushi does exactly what is says on the tin. Just Thai, Indian Delights and Arabic Cuisine serve vibrant international dishes, with Rum Shed Bar & Grill serving rums and wood-fired dishes. Wellness and dosha-specific menus are also available.

Shanti Maurice has 61 spacious suites and villas, all styled in neutral, earthy tones and with views of the Indian Ocean. They feature panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, private terraces and, in some cases, private pools. Several rooms offer Shanti’s Club Level Experience, which includes a dedicated concierge, access to the Club Lounge, a complimentary mini bar (alcohol-free beverages, one refill per day), 10% off airport limousine transfers, and a range of additional privileges.

A Tourist Fee of €3 per person per night is payable in resort for all international visitors aged 12 years and above.

LOCATION

Shanti Maurice is on a quiet beach on Mauritius’ south coast, with its own coral reserve in the Indian Ocean. It’s backed by dramatic mountains and surrounded by 35 acres of tropical gardens, so it feels nicely secluded, but it’s within easy reach of the sleepy surrounding villages, the 18-hole Avalon Golf Estate and the island’s famous team plantations. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is a 30-minute drive away. 


WHEN TO GO

Mauritius benefits from a mild climate all year but the best time to visit is from April to June and from September to December. Mauritius also has a microclimate with different temperatures and climatic conditions depending on the region.

I had the same holiday through well being escapes in 2010 before the hotel changed management. In March 2013 - although the spa is still amazing, the kitchen and rest of hotel isn't interested in wellbeing at all any more. The concept of an ayuverdic menu doesn't exist any more (except for breakfast although I was brought the wrong dosha breakfast three times), and the kitchen staff are not trained in preparing ayuverdic food - I had five days of mistakes in food, and had to speak to hotel management. Having been sold a holding by wellbeing escapes and had it confirmed that the ayuverdic menu was still available I was incredibly disappointed. I also know i wasn't alone in feeling very uncared for as a single traveller and I certainly wouldn't return to that hotel as a single traveller. This was a very expensive holiday and I don't think wellbeing escapes should sell it any more for single travellers as you don't in any way feel looked after under the current management, particularly compared to how well I felt looked after and how much I loved the holiday in 2010.
