About Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena

Tucked among sun-drenched vineyards in the Ribera del Duero wine region sits one of Europe’s best-preserved 12th-century Cistercian monasteries. Once home to medieval monks, Castilla Termal has been sensitively reimagined as a five-star spa hotel, where romantic rooms pair historic stone walls and wooden beams with contemporary comforts.

The spa draws on mineral-rich waters from the San Bernardo spring, prized for their restorative properties. It’s also exceptionally beautiful, all vaulted stone ceilings and delicate frescoes, with thermal pools, intimate treatment rooms, contrast circuits and even a private chapel experience that blends ritual with deep relaxation.

Beyond the spa, the surrounding vineyards and Duero River create an idyllic backdrop for wine tasting, cycling and leisurely walks. Prefer to unwind? Find a lounger by the outdoor pool and soak up the countryside views.

Just so you know, the hotel is loved by locals and welcomes guests of all ages, but its tranquil atmosphere makes it better suited to adults. Only a small number of children are accommodated at a time, and access to the pools is limited to designated hours. English isn’t widely spoken, but our guests never find this an issue.

Wellness at Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena

Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena Spa draws on the healing properties of its mineral-rich waters, discovered by local monks in the 12th century. Sulphates, sodium-calcium, and hypothermal waters, gently mineralised, are said to support digestion and metabolism, stimulate blood flow, soothe muscles, and promote overall relaxation and wellbeing.

You can choose from a handful of wellness programmes here, including fitness and water-focused stays. Don’t miss the hotel’s signature Capilla de San Pedro ritual – a private experience carried out in a beautifully restored chapel. In soft, atmospheric lighting, you’ll be exfoliated with products from the Castilla Termal range, followed by bi-thermal showers, alternating hot and cold pools, a sauna, Hammam, and stone foot bath.

The spa’s hydrothermal complex includes two mineral-medicinal thermal pools – indoor (heated) and outdoor, along with 16 treatment rooms, Jacuzzis, bubble seats, and a variety of water jets, both above and below the surface. A dedicated relaxation area, fully equipped gym, and poolside terrace round things off. Water temperature is maintained at a toasty 32 to 34°C, too.

What’s on the menu?

The hotel’s restaurant, Converso, serves traditional recipes with a modern twist, using the finest seasonal produce – lots grown in the hotel’s organic kitchen garden. The menu is fresh, balanced, and full of flavour, though not suited to those following a strict weight-loss or restrictive diet plan.

For lighter bites, there’s La Cilla gastro bar, offering sharing plates and snacks, while the hotel’s wine cellar has a special selection of local vintages. In summer, meals can also be enjoyed on the outdoor terrace, which shows off views over the vineyards.

Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena produces its own internationally awarded red wine, Converso, made in limited quantities.

Your stay includes daily breakfast, and while lunch and dinner aren’t included in any meal plan, both can be enjoyed at the restaurants.
