We caught up with the resident Doctor at Zulal Wellness Resort in Qatar to find out more about TAIM, (Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine). This holistic healing system originated in the Arab world and has been practiced since the 7th century. Here's what we learnt.
What is TAIM?
Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine is a holistic wellness approach rooted in Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine, a medical encyclopedia written in 1025 by the Persian polymath Avicenna (Ibn Sina), and incorporating elements from Greek, Persian, Indian, Unani, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. TAIM combines ancient Islamic healing with modern science to support physical, emotional, and spiritual health through balanced movement, mindfulness, diet, and rest.
Does it differ from other ancient health principles like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine?
The concept of the four humours is a central part of ancient and medieval medicine, especially in systems like Greek, Roman, Unani, and some aspects of Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine. The theory proposes that human health and temperament are governed by four bodily fluids, or 'humours', each associated with specific qualities and elements. These humours need to be in balance for optimal health, and an imbalance is believed to lead to illness or changes in temperament. It's similar to the five elements of Chinese Medicine and the four doshas of Ayurveda.
What does working with the humours look like in TAIM?
