Dominika talks us through her time at MasQi in Spain, a boutique wellness retreat for adults where yoga & meditation meet holistic healing therapies

MasQi The Energy House is a peaceful, boutique holistic wellness retreat in the mountains of Alicante, Spain, and one of our smaller yoga retreats. Combining yoga, meditation, healing therapies, macrobiotic cuisine and mindfulness practices, MasQi offers a deeply restorative wellbeing experience for guests seeking balance, emotional reset and reconnection. Although Alicante is only about an hour away, it feels like a completely different world. Surrounded by forest, all you hear are birds singing and the breeze moving through the trees — the perfect spot for a peaceful and quiet escape. The retreat itself is quite compact and easy to navigate, so getting around is effortless. After check-in, you’re also given a quick tour of the grounds, which helps you settle in straight away.
Most guests staying at MasQi during my visit were Spanish, although there were also a few Dutch, Swiss, and German guests. The crowd was a mix of couples, mother-daughter duos, and solo female travellers. Even though I was the only person from the UK, I felt completely comfortable from the start and quickly felt part of the little community there. At no point did I feel out of place or awkward. The guests were of mixed ages overall, though mostly 35+.
The food was probably the biggest surprise for me — I honestly didn’t expect this level of quality from such a small retreat. Every single dish I tried was outstanding and easily on par with what you’d expect in a 5-star wellness resort or a gourmet restaurant.
The portions are on the smaller side, but the food is incredibly nourishing, healthy, and thoughtfully prepared — mostly plant-based, with the occasional fish dish. Everything is freshly served to your table, with no buffets at all, even at breakfast. Lunch and dinner are both four-course meals, with two starters, a main, and dessert.
What I loved most was the pace of it all. Meals are never rushed, and for the first time in a long while, I actually had the chance to sit down, slow down, and properly enjoy my food. I’d spend almost an hour over lunch, really tasting and appreciating every dish instead of inhaling it in 10 minutes like I usually do, during a busy work week. It was such a treat!
It’s worth mentioning that MasQi isn’t a traditional spa hotel; you won’t find facilities like a sauna or steam room here. Instead, the focus is much more on mindfulness, nature, and slowing down. The beautiful yoga dome is really the heart of the retreat — a peaceful circular shala where all yoga and meditation sessions take place.
There’s also an outdoor pool, although it’s unheated, so during the cooler months it’s mainly for the brave! The massage house has several treatment and consultation rooms, but these are only accessible if you’ve booked an appointment.
One of the best things about the retreat is its direct access to lovely walking and hiking trails, perfect if you enjoy exploring nature. The garden is another wonderful spot to simply switch off — whether that’s reading, sunbathing, relaxing, or just sitting quietly with your eyes closed, listening to the sounds around you. It’s incredibly grounding and peaceful.
I stayed at MasQi for three nights and followed a personalised programme that included two yoga classes a day, one meditation session, and a therapy treatment. I genuinely enjoyed all of the yoga classes — some were more dynamic, like Vinyasa, while others were slower and gentler, such as Hatha. One morning, we even did chair yoga, as well as a moving meditation-style yoga session focused on breathing and mindful walking.
The evening meditations were different every day, too, incorporating various techniques, including chanting. All classes were taught in both Spanish and English, and I never had any trouble following along. The teachers were incredibly warm, welcoming, and accommodating throughout my stay.
When it came to treatments, I tried an Abhyanga massage, a wonderfully relaxing full-body experience using warm oils. I also had a private coaching session with MasQi’s owner, Sonia Ferrer, and a kinesiology session with Sylvia. The kinesiology treatment was particularly interesting — it’s a form of energetic healing tailored to each individual. After a short energy assessment, Sylvia seemed to understand what my body and mind needed most within an instant. Afterwards, she even provided me with a detailed report in English explaining her findings and what she had focused on during the session, which I found really thoughtful and helpful.
Whenever I wasn’t in a yoga class, treatment, or enjoying a meal, I spent my time wandering around the grounds, going for walks, reading, or simply resting. I also ended up having afternoon naps most days — something I rarely do at home!
By the end of my three-night stay, I felt completely recharged. My body felt lighter and looser, and my mind much calmer. After quite a difficult and turbulent period before this trip, taking this time for myself was exactly what I needed. Would I come back? Absolutely, without hesitation.
